I. Memory Pings Soft Now

I was halfway through making tea when the memory lit up.

Not in my head — not like memory used to feel — but across the kitchen wall, soft white text against matte black:

I didn’t move. The kettle hummed low. The room smelled like oolong and dust.

It had been… seven years? Maybe more. I hadn’t seen her name in that long. The OS must’ve cross-threaded her back into relevance — maybe off an emotion vector I tripped when I passed that rusted turnstile downtown.

The system was always listening. Not creepy. Just… observant. Too observant.

The OS froze Mira’s face mid-expression.

V. Memory Is Being Authored

That memory wasn’t just being indexed — it was being written.

That users were finding strangers in their most intimate moments.
That someone — or something — was stitching stories to make memory feel complete.

And maybe that my Mira wasn’t just mine.

Maybe her smile was a patchwork. Her voice a composite. Her goodbye a chorus of goodbyes.

Behind me, the OS chimed softly:

I stared at the wall.
And this time, I let it run.

VI. Final Playback

Mira looked at me.

“You always thought I was about to say something,” she said.
